4th of July
4th of July is so much fun. We all look forward to getting together with friends, good barbeques, water play and of course the fireworks. However, this holiday is very trying for all pets, so we want to give you some tools to keep your pet safe and happy
-
Sudden loud noises are frightening and frequently painful to dogs and cats. Their sense of hearing is much finer than ours, and the sounds of fireworks, thunder, gunshots, etc. will frequently cause an anxious response. Some animals are only mildly bothered, but some are actually terrified. Keep your pet inside and away from the noisy activity. Put them in a room where they feel safe, keep the lights on, and play music or some other background noise. If your dog feels most safe under the desk, or in the shower, let them stay there. Cats are usually ok if they can hide in their favorite places as well.
- For the extremely fearful or dogs prone to anxiety attacks, we can prescribe tranquilizers or anti-anxiety medications to help. These medications are very effective, but do require a recent physical examination as they are not without side effects. Over the counter anti-histamines such as Benedryl are helpful. The dose is 25 mg per 25 lbs of weight of your dog and can be given up to three times a day. Giving you dog lots of exercise early in the day is also helpful. They will be tired at night
Being aware of your pet's needs will dramatically improve the holiday for the whole family.
